Take the assessment →Your insurance checklist
- Work out your monthly income gap if you couldn't work for six months, and for two years.
- Find what your employer's short- and long-term disability plans pay, and whether the benefits are taxable.
- Choose an elimination period your savings can cover, and a benefit period to at least 65 if you can.
- Check the policy's definition of disability and whether it's non-cancelable.
- Sign in to your Social Security account to see your estimated Disability benefit.
Questions to ask your insurer
- How does the policy define disability: my own occupation, or any occupation?
- What are the elimination period and the benefit period?
- What share of my income does it replace, and is there a monthly cap?
- Is the policy non-cancelable or guaranteed renewable?
- Does it pay residual or partial benefits if I return part-time?
- Does it reduce payments by Social Security or other benefits?
- Does it cover illness as well as accidents?
